Background of the Study :

Trade policy reforms are critical in enhancing domestic market competitiveness by reducing trade barriers, streamlining customs procedures, and promoting market integration. In Nigeria, the Ministry of Trade has implemented a series of reforms between 2000 and 2020 aimed at improving domestic market efficiency and competitiveness (Oluwaseun, 2023). These reforms have included the simplification of import-export processes, tariff adjustments, and the introduction of digital trade platforms. Empirical research indicates that such policy reforms can lead to lower transaction costs, increased market access, and improved product quality, thereby stimulating competition and innovation (Chinwe, 2024). However, challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, infrastructural deficits, and limited enforcement capacity continue to affect the full realization of these benefits. This study investigates the impact of trade policy reforms on the competitiveness of Nigeria’s domestic market by analyzing trade data, competitiveness indices, and stakeholder interviews. The goal is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the reforms’ effectiveness and to recommend policy measures to further enhance market competitiveness (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of trade policy reforms by the Ministry of Trade, domestic market competitiveness in Nigeria remains suboptimal. Regulatory ambiguities, infrastructural challenges, and inconsistent policy enforcement have prevented the full benefits of trade reforms from materializing (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study seeks to identify the factors that limit the effectiveness of these reforms and to assess their impact on domestic market dynamics, thereby providing recommendations for policy adjustments to strengthen competitiveness.

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the impact of trade policy reforms on domestic market competitiveness.

2. To identify key challenges affecting reform effectiveness.

3. To propose policy measures to enhance market competitiveness.

Research Questions:

1. How have trade policy reforms affected domestic market competitiveness?

2. What are the major challenges limiting the success of these reforms?

3. What policy interventions can improve market competitiveness?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Trade policy reforms positively impact domestic competitiveness.

2. Infrastructural and regulatory challenges limit reform effectiveness.

3. Enhanced policy implementation improves market outcomes.

Significance of the Study (100 words):

This study is significant as it assesses the impact of trade policy reforms on Nigeria’s domestic market competitiveness, providing valuable insights for the Ministry of Trade and policymakers. Its findings will help refine policy measures to reduce trade barriers and promote a more competitive domestic market, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study focuses on trade policy reforms in Nigeria from 2000 to 2020 and their impact on domestic market competitiveness. It does not extend to international trade dynamics or other sectors.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Trade Policy Reforms: Changes in regulations governing trade to improve market efficiency.

2. Domestic Market Competitiveness: The ability of local markets to operate efficiently and competitively.

3. Ministry of Trade: The government agency responsible for trade policy formulation and implementation.
